The last swallowtail to emerge

Six caterpillars and three weeks later, finally the last one has transformed into a butterfly.

Five minutes before emerging, the cocoon has grown transparent.

A few seconds after emerging, the butterfly found a spot to attach itself. He is all wrinkled and he looks very fragile

The drying time had started. The butterfly stayed in this position for a couple of hours, slowly stretching its wings, legs, antenaes.

An hour later, I placed the butterfly outside in a well protected area: the umbrella tree near my window.

It is a cool morning (only 15C). The butterfly took three hours before finally flying away.

This summer, one of my interesting project was to farm swallowtail butterflies... It just happened after I discovered a swallowtail caterpillar in my parsley plant and decided to bring the plant inside my house to watch the whole evolution of caterpillar to butterfly. It also happened that a group of wasps, who paralyse caterpillars in order to lay they eggs into them where very active around my garden at that time. So I had a mission to save this caterpillar... I ended up, a week later, with 6 of them munching on my parsley plant. Thanks to the local grocery store, I was able to supply them with more parsley because they would have starved. They eat a lot. They eat all day.

When it is time to pupate (sleep) they become very active looking for the right spot to pupate. My cat would get very excited watching climbing all over the place. One day I went out and one of them has climbed my curtain and had started to pupate on the curtain rod in my living room. I left it there and kept an eye on it.

Then from the first chrysalides, a butterfly emerged. It is so vulnerable when all wet with wings all wrinkly. I placed it in my garden and it hanged there for 2 hours. To watch it unfolding and slowly taking shape was just amazing.

This is my second butterfly: a beautiful male. He is the one that settle in my living room to pupate.

Since, I have given one pupae to a friend. The butterfly should emerge in 5 days. I have freed 2 caterpillars in my garden when they started getting restless. I have one more pupae which should emerge as a butterfly in one week.

L’exposition D’ICI-DE LÀ invite le spectateur à ignorer la perspective unique offerte par la lentille photographique, afin d’explorer le relativisme des lieux représentés par les scènes photographiées. Par l’intermédiaire de diptyques, je remets en question la réalité succincte de l’approche traditionnelle de la photographie, où les images capturées, sans recadrage ni manipulation, sont individuellement présentées et où leur signification est sans déviation.

Inspirée par la narration visuelle de la bande dessinée et de la cinématographie, où il existe entre deux vignettes une multitude d’interprétations, je fais appel aux diptyques photographiques pour créer des points de tension non seulement par le contenu et la composition des images, mais aussi par leur signification. Les diptyques, par lesquels les espaces se juxtaposent et les moments se confondent, invitent le public à reconsidérer les faits présentés. En combinant des photographies différentes, je fais en sorte que les images puissent ainsi faire réfléchir et suggérer un autre sens que celui donné par une simple lecture à la lettre, invitant l’observateur à s’approprier les scènes proposées et à s’en créer une idée personnelle.

The D’ICI-DE LÀ exhibition invites the viewer to ignore the single perspective given by the photographic lens in order to explore the relativity of the places represented in the photographs. Using diptychs, I challenge the succinct reality of photography's traditional approach in which captured images are presented individually, without framing or manipulation, and their meaning is without deflection.

Inspired by the visual narration of comic strips and cinematography, where a multitude of interpretations between two vignettes may exist, I use photographic diptychs to create points of tension not only in content and image composition, but also in their meaning. The diptychs, where spaces are juxtaposed and moments merge, invite the public to reconsider the facts as they are presented. Combining different photographs fosters reconsideration of the images and suggests other meanings than those produced by superficial examination, inviting the observer to make the scenes their own and develop their personal interpretation.

Cette étude purement esthétique a évoluée au cours des cinq dernières années pendant lesquelles j’ai photographié la formation et la fonte des glaces sur les rivières. Cette recherche est uniquement formelle et ne se prête aucunement à une interprétation scientifique mais tient plutôt de la poétique visuelle. Ce qui m’intéresse avant tout, c’est l’étude des formes, des transparences et des lumières réfléchies et réfractées lors de la fusion de l’eau en glace en automne et la fonte des glaces au printemps : la beauté méconnue de ces phénomènes naturels.

Cette œuvre fait partie d’une série qui est une réflexion sur l’utilisation de l’Internet et les logiciels d’échanges sociaux tel que Facebook et dont l’utilisation vous amène à découvrir que votre identité, que vous pensiez unique, est souvent partagée avec plusieurs inconnues. Aussi, en recherchant votre nom sur « Google » il vous est présenté une multitude de ces pages sur lesquelles votre nom apparaîtra : des pages qui sont vôtre et des pages d’inconnues qui n’ont en commun avec vous qu’un nom.

C’est en visitant les pages de ces femmes que ce projet s’est amorcé. En amalgamant leurs photos et les codes cryptiques de nos fichiers numériques, j’ai réalisé un tissage de nos vies autrement parallèles.

The Girl Who Was Eaten By the Dark

On Saturday July 17th at 11am, The Girl Who Was Eaten By the Dark by Laura Astwood for The Ottawa Stilt Union was performed at the Remic Rapids on the Ottawa River, in Ottawa, Ontario. The performance happened amongst John Ceprano's Rock Sculptures which are created each summer.

Photo taken during my last "Digital photography, Taking Better Pictures" class when the students met at the Canadian War Museum.

The reason I love teaching photography is the inspiration I get from my students. They offer a fresh way to look at things by seeing spaces/situations differently than I would. They allow me to grow with them and remind me to just enjoy the moment.

Photo prise lors de la dernière sortie de ma classe au Musée canadien de la guerre. Le titre du cours est "Digital photography, Taking Better Pictures".

Une des raisons pour laquelle j'aime enseigner c'est que je trouve une grande inspiration dans la façon rafraîchissante que mes étudiants ont à voir et percevoir les choses. Ils me rappellent aussi de m'arrêter et de tout simplement me réjouir du moment présent.

Ottawa, le 30 avril 2010 – Du 8 mai au 15 juin 2010, le Centre d’artistes Voix Visuelle expose le travail de trois artistes qui utilisent la photographie comme véhicule de la réalité sociale et culturelle de notre époque.

Par une approche traditionnelle et sans subterfuges, Doris Lamontagne explore les zones délimitant les espaces humains et naturels, ainsi que l’effet de ces frontières sur leurs occupants.

Avec son projet Aller-retour, Raymond Aubin associe la prise de vue photographique et l’écriture de poèmes haïku pour effectuer un retour sur son enfance et sa jeunesse. L’artiste tente ainsi d’instaurer un dialogue entre ces deux formes de création distinctes, misant sur des contenus se complétant, plutôt que sur l’illustration mutuelle de chacun.

Chantal Dahan est originaire de France et s’est établie dans le Pontiac, une région du Québec peuplée majoritairement d’anglophones et d’une minorité francophone. Son corpus photographique présente des trames narratives réelles et fictives qui font miroiter « la réalité du Pontiac ».

Le Centre d’artistes Voix Visuelle est situé au 81, avenue Beechwood, à Vanier, et est ouvert de 11 h à 16 h, du mardi au samedi.
